We like to think of ourselves as the Better Business Bureau for online shoppers. And speaking of the BBB…
File a Complaint with the Better Business Bureau
If you suspect a merchant isn’t living up to their promises, file a complaint against them. The Better Business Bureau has an online form you can fill out.
BBB intervenes when there is a disagreement between businesses and their customers. However, they are unable to handle matters that are or have been litigated. For more serious criminal charges, you’ll want to contact the appropriate officials.
Contact the Federal Trade Commission
The FTC is the consumer protection watch-dog for the entire US. If you want to file a complaint against an online business related to fraud, deception, or unfair business practices, the FTC is the agency to contact.
Inform the Locals at the State Attorney General’s Office
While the Federal Trade Commission acts on national crime reports, the Attorney General’s office can deal with crime in your state.
Your Attorney General’s office is willing to deal with a wide variety of consumer issues. You will want to contact them with the most obvious incidents (to report online scam, for example) as well as less blatant attacks to consumer rights.
Activate the Law Enforcement Officials at IC3
The Internet Crime Complaint Center is a joint effort that combines specialists from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), Bureau of Justice Assistance and the National White Collar Crime Center. The information you provide while filing a complaint against an online business will help them detect fraud trends, protect other potential victims, and eventually bring the criminal into custody.
Consider Other Agencies and Tactics
Sometimes, a fraudster will employ multiple methods of deceit. If you suspect the online merchant in question is engaged in multiple fraud schemes, you might need to contact additional agencies. For example, if you want to know how to report a phone scam, you’ll need to deal with additional agencies not mentioned above.
If your consumer rights have been violated, take a stand. File a complaint against an online business if you feel you’ve been wronged. Help protect yourself and others like you!
